DRAGONS!!!

There are lots of different kind of dragons. Winged dragons, fire breathing dragons, friendly dragons, mean dragons! Have you seen some different dragons here at Once Upon a Toon?

Welcome to 2000, the year of the DRAGON!!! I have always loved dragons. In fact, I have several stories I have written about dragons, and I love to draw them. There's my story, The Smartest Dragon, which has three dragons in it- two big mean, scary older brother dragons and their friendly little sister. Then there is The Coldest Dragon about a penguin who befriends the Ice Dragon. So it seemed only appropriate that I should share a story with you about someone who loves dragons even more than me... he is The King Who Loved Dragons!

The King Who Loved Dragons, adapted by Joe Wos

Once Upon a Toon…

There was a king who loved dragons. He collected all things dragons, he had dragon statues, dragon toys, dragon puppets, dragon furniture, dragon slippers and pajamas, dragon lunch boxes, dragon hats, dragon shoes, dragon toothbrushes, dragon thimbles, dragon spoons, dragon boxes, dragon pencils, dragon bobble head thingies, dragon teapots, dragon shirts, a dragon crown, dragons dragons dragons and the list drags on and on. He had a castle full of dragon stuff.. But, the one thing he did not have was a dragon drawing that he loved. You see, by this time there were no more dragons around, but the king had a wild imagination and would tell everyone what he thought a dragon should look like. But no one could find a dragon that fit the king's description. He looked high and low, under and over, from side to side and far and wide but alas there was not a single dragon that looked like the wonderful dragon in his imagination.

The king decided to commission an artist to create his dragon. A thousand gold pieces to whoever creates the most wonderful dragon! Artist came from all over the world with ideas and renditions of what a dragon should be. The king loved all the drawings but none of them was as glorious or even close to the dragon he had hoped for.

"Is there no one who knows what a dragon should be?" Asked the king. Just then, a young boy entered the castle, "Your majesty," said the boy, "I believe I can draw your dragon, but it will take me six months to do so." "Six months!" cried the king, "I have waited this long, I can wait a few months more. You have six months, no more no less."

Six months passed and the king waited for his dragon. At last, on the last day of the sixth month, the boy returned holding a blank tablet and a pen in his hand. "Well," said the king, "Where is my dragon?"  "What does your dragon look like?" inquired the boy.

The king answered,"Well, he's tall and slender with a crown, and funny horns with wavy stripes. He's pink and green with dots and triangles all over." The king described the dragon in great detail. When he was finished, he noticed the boy had drawn the entire dragon from his description in a matter of minutes! "There is my dragon" said the king! "At last, I have my dragon, it is beautiful!" The king was greatly pleased.

"You have done well boy, but let me ask you this, you said you needed six months to draw my dragon and yet you drew it in only two minutes. Why did you need six months if you could draw a dragon in only a few minutes?" he asked.

The boy looked at the king, smiled, and said "It took me six months to learn how to draw a dragon in two minutes!"

The king had his dragon and lived happily ever after. As for the boy, he still draws dragons and is the fastest draw in the East!
